Unit 2: Intrusion Fantasy
In "intrusion fantasy", the
fantastic intrudes on reality (unlike portal fantasies), and the protagonists'
engagement with that intrusion drives the story. Normally realist in style, assuming the normal world
as their base, intrusion fantasies rely heavily on explanation and description. Immersive
and portal fantasies may themselves host intrusions.
Neil Gaiman:
Neverwhere
The final unit for the
course will ask students to build upon previous units but turn attention to the
element of intrusion—and how characters rise or fall because of it. Do characters welcome the intrusion, or do
they become overwhelmed? Are they
ultimately made better because of the intrusion?
