Plan for January 6th

Ursula Le Guin has written that “fantasy is true, of course. It isn’t factual, but it is true.  The fantasy genre involves a different way of apprehending existence but it is no less true than realism.”

How do the stories we read fit with her literary criticism?

·       Journal a bit for each story

Discusion protocol:

Roles
·       Facilitator
·       Timekeeper
·       Participants

Time
Three (3) minutes total for each participant (including the facilitator and timekeeper), plus 10 minutes for the steps in red.

Process:

Choose ONE story to work with in your group.  Then:

1.    Review the story silently and annotate/ take notes for the following:
• What Assumptions does the author of the text hold (think audience and purpose-- what does the author want you to walk away with thinking or feeling?)
• What do you Agree with in the text (themes)?
• What do you want to Argue with in the text?
• What parts of the text do you want to Act upon (this may or may not be evident)?

2.    In a round, have each person identify one assumption in the text, citing the text (with page numbers, if appropriate) as evidence.  Then, each person should talk about the text in light of each of the remaining “A”s, taking them one at a time.

3.    Once everyone has had time to talk, end the session with an open discussion framed around one of the A prompts.

4.    Debrief the text experience as a class.
